This seminar will look at the challenge facing the cruise industry in particular as coastal communities grow more wary of air pollution and the challenge of greenhouse gas emissions. Although it might be unfair to single out cruise vessels in relation to an industry-wide issue, the unique needs of these vessels, and their high public profile, make them a natural target in this context. Bevan will outline the current international regulation applicable to shipping, the discussions currently underway at the International Maritime Organization in relation to climate change, and New Zealand’s poor record of engagement in this area.

About the presenter:
Dr Bevan Marten specialises in maritime law, and has recently published Maritime Law in New Zealand, the first work of its kind in this country. His research interests include the international and environmental aspects of shipping law.
