It’s time to take the wraps off the details of the Public Health Observatory of New Zealand’s (PHONZ) first monthly webinar for this year. This one comes to you from across the Tasman.

They’ll be hosting Moira Hewitt, Justin Harvey, and Sally Rayner of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare as they discuss the role of the AIHW, the data work of their Cancer and Screening Units and how this work fits with the broader Cancer and screening data ecosystem in Australia.

The AIHW is an independent statutory Australian Government agency and the key data agency for health and welfare data. This presentation will focus on the role of the AIHW, the data work of the Cancer and Screening Units and how this work fits with the broader Cancer and screening data ecosystem in Australia.

Bios
Moira Hewitt is Head of the Screening Analysis and Monitoring Unit at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (NSW). She has been in this role since May 2021. She joined the AIHW in 2007 and has held Unit Head roles since 2009 across various areas including Tobacco Alcohol and Other Drugs and Housing and Homelessness. Prior to joining the AIHW, Moira worked as a Senior Public Health Manager in the UK and as an epidemiologist in Western Sydney. Moira has qualifications in Nursing, Epidemiology and Health Informatics and extensive experience in health and health related areas in clinical, research, teaching and managerial roles.

Justin Harvey was appointed Head of the Cancer Data and Monitoring Unit at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) in 2012. The Cancer, Data and Monitoring Unit compiles the Australian Mesothelioma Registry and the Australian Cancer Database, and analyses and reports a variety of statistics on cancer such as incidence, risk, trends, projections, survival, prevalence and treatment. Mr Harvey is a member of the Australian Mesothelioma Registry Expert Advisory Group, the Cancer Monitoring Advisory Group, the Australasian Association of Cancer Registries, the Australian Cancer Atlas Project Advisory Group, and the Youth Cancer Services Data Advisory Group.

Previous to his current role, Mr Harvey held positions in AIHW’s Cardiovascular, Diabetes and Kidney Unit and Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs Unit. Prior to joining the AIHW, Mr Harvey worked for 10 years at the Australian Bureau of Statistics where he managed various sections responsible for population surveys such as the National Health Survey; National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Health Survey; Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing; Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers; and the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Children.

Sally Rayner is the Unit Head of the Cancer and Screening Linkage and Data Development Unit. She recently joined the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare from the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, where she led clinical registry policy and health reporting functions. Sally has more than 20 years’ experience in health and welfare analysis and policy and has previously held director-level roles at the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Social Services.
