Abstract
Although seemly disparate, Statistics and Genetics are two scientific disciplines that grew together from the beginning of the 20th century. From Galton and Fisher to Henderson and Hayes there have always been problems, and most importantly solutions, tackled by scholars in both areas. In this talk, Dr Costilla will introduce some of the historical problems that intersect these sciences. He will also share his own journey in Animal Breeding and his take on what the future could look like.

Bio
A former VUW graduate, Dr Costilla works as an applied geneticist at the Cawthron Institute in Nelson. His research is focused on genomics, computational methods and their applications to Animal Breeding and Genetics. After his PhD, he completed a postdoc at the University of Queensland, Australia and worked as a scientist at AgResearch.
