How can a multiple knowledge systems approach come to life in a secondary science classroom? What does it look like in practice and how can we continue to grow this work in meaningful and sustainable ways?
This webinar is brought to you by secondary science kaiako from Green Bay High School (Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland), Lincoln High School (Waitaha/Canterbury), and Wellington East Girls’ College (Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington) who were connected through their involvement in a Teaching and Learning Research Initiative (TLRI). This TLRI project is titled Mātauranga Māori, Science, and Te Ao Tūroa: Fostering Leadership and Collaboration for a Multiple Knowledge Systems Approach to Science Education.
Representing three diverse kura communities from across Aotearoa New Zealand, the presenters will share honest reflections on their journeys towards incorporating a multiple knowledge systems approach in secondary science. They will explore what has worked well, what has been challenging and the lessons learned along the way. Through classroom examples, student voice and practical resources, participants will gain insights they can adapt to their own contexts.
The webinar will begin by exploring the purpose of a multiple knowledge systems approach and its value within science education, including how recognising multiple worldviews alongside one another can deepen students’ understanding of the practices of science alongside Mātauranga Māori. The presenters will also reflect on the importance of tangata Tiriti relationships and the opportunities for collaboration that strengthen this work.
The second half of the webinar will focus on sustaining this approach in everyday practice. The presenters will discuss common barriers and share the strategies that have allowed them to continue this work with confidence, optimism and a focus on enduring change. The session will conclude with a section dedicated to addressing common pātai and an opportunity for attendees to have access to LUX on the Science Learning Hub to support ongoing collaboration and professional learning.
Whether you are just beginning to explore multiple knowledge systems or are looking for practical ideas to strengthen your existing practice, this webinar will provide authentic classroom stories, concrete strategies and encouragement from kaiako who are navigating this journey together.
This session will be valuable for secondary science kaiako and leaders who are building sustainable science programmes that incorporate multiple knowledge systems and Mātauranga Māori, and who are seeking practical strategies to maintain and strengthen this work as curriculum and qualification reforms continue to evolve.
The webinar will be using Teams and the organisers will send the link to all those who register just prior to the webinar. Although this webinar is aimed at secondary educators, all are welcome to attend.
