The empty circle, full circle and closing the loop: A brief history of the development of intravenous anaesthesia

The majority belief is that the origins of anaesthesia involved inhaling gases and vapours – but is that true? Circle is the name given to the breathing apparatus used for delivering gases and vapors for anaesthesia. It continues in use in more modern forms to this day. You may then ask why use it in announcing a talk about intravenous anaesthesia? Some license is taken by using variations of meanings for that word and where we now stand with delivering anaesthesia.
