Sometimes the economy is treated as an immutable force, something we have to squeeze and re-arrange our messy human lives around. But what if this wasn’t the case? What if we were able to democratically restructure the economy of Aotearoa, to put people first. What if we set out with the goal of being a good ancestor, and leaving enough for our tamariki and whenua to thrive? Dr. Ganesh Ahirao (aka Ganesh Nana) has over 45 years of professional experience in economics. He has used this time to fight for fairer outcomes in our society, and to argue for changes to establish an economic system that properly serves the communities of Aotearoa, rather than vice-versa. He comes to Critical Signals to talk about what a fairer economy could look like, including his experiences of the importance of community organisations like Kaibosh, The Drug Foundation, the City Mission Whakamaru, and ActionStation.
Ganesh Ahirao
Dr Ganesh Ahirao (aka Ganesh Nana) has over 45 years of professional experience in economics. He has used this time to fight for fairer outcomes in our society, and to argue for changes to establish an economic system that properly serves the communities of Aotearoa, rather than vice-versa.
He currently occupies his time in voluntary roles with several charities including Treasurer for Kaibosh. He has previously been Chair of the Productivity Commission Te Kōmihana Whai Hua o Aotearoa, and led BERL — a NZ-owned consultancy — to be an Accredited Living Wage employer.
