How can Wikipedia play a role in plant conservation?
Wikipedia is one of the top-visited websites in the world, and content from the platform is used across the internet. It’s true that anyone can edit Wikipedia, and a strong community of volunteer editors keep the encyclopedia relevant and reliable, but there’s always more to do.
In this Wikipedia Workshop for the 2026 New Zealand Plant Conservation Network Conference, you’ll learn how to upload openly-licensed images from iNaturalist and the NZPCN website into Wikimedia Commons, and add them to Wikipedia articles. This hands-on workshop will be led by experienced Wikipedians, and is suitable for anyone wanting to make a bigger impact with their iNaturalist images. Bring a laptop and help support conservation efforts by increasing the accessibility and visibility of our native biodiversity.
Facilitators: Heidi Meudt (Curator Botany at Te Papa, and Wikimedian) and Siobhan Leachman (Independent researcher and Wikimedian)
