The 2026 survey of nearly 3,000 New Zealanders shows cohesion slipping across every dimension measured — with financial stress emerging as the single biggest driver, and trust in institutions falling sharply. It also reveals some hopeful strengths in terms of New Zealanders’ sense of belonging and pride, as well as a high number of meaningful connections across different groups.
