Presented by: Johniel Bocacao (VUW School of Engineering and Computer Science; ACC Policy, Evidence & Insights)

Following from his last presentation on the current state of AI and algorithm use in the New Zealand Government in mid 2024, this presentation is an update and a culmination of Johniel’s research into how AI and algorithms can be better employed and governed in our public service. You’ll explore solutions to challenges the Government currently faces around deploying and evaluating AI, why existing regulations – while not perfect – are surprisingly robust when it comes to promoting safe transparent AI in government, and demonstrate what ACC is doing to build towards this (admittedly optimistic) future of a more humane and human public service in Aotearoa New Zealand – contrary to the belief that AI adoption could further roboticise bureaucracy.

AI and Society Seminar Series
These seminars consider AI’s social impacts in a range of areas, and discuss how AI can best be overseen to maximise positive impacts and minimise negative ones.
They are open to anyone who is interested in attending. They don’t presuppose any technical background, if they present AI systems, they do it ‘from scratch’, in ways that should be accessible to everyone.

Discussing AI’s social impacts is a very interdisciplinary task, and their speakers and participants come from many different backgrounds, in academia, government, industry and NGOs.
The series organiser is Ali Knott (ali.knott@vuw.ac.nz): please email Ali if you’d like to be added to the mailing list.
