Preparation is the key to handing disasters big and small, and disabled people are often left out of disaster preparedness planning. This oversight threatens lives. In this disabled-led workshop, Katie shares how her experiences working in some of the most extreme environments on earth- from the stormy Southern Ocean to managing live events during a global pandemic- has provided a foundation for accessible disaster planning. Explore practical preparation tools, practices and knowledge that fosters resilience, creativity, and confidence, and learn how planning for accessibility in disaster management is better for everyone.

Katie Querin
Katie is currently working with Arts Access Aotearoa to increase accessibility in the arts to Deaf and disabled people. She blends her lived and professional experience as a disabled person, tall ship sailor, and theatre stage manager to support individuals and organisations to remove barriers through creativity and education. When she’s not passionately encouraging the removal of barriers to the arts, she can be found hiking, climbing, and writing. Originally from the US, Katie has lived in Aotearoa since 2016.

Critical Signals is a three month gathering, practicing community resilience in person based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand.
