Abstract
Lousie McMillan will talk about two of her research areas. The first is statistical techniques for population genetics, work that began during herPhD with Rachel Fewster. They have developed a visualisation method to illustrate the genetic connectivity of animal populations, and genetic measures that can tell when one population of animals was founded by individuals from another population. She is currently working on unsupervised clustering of DNA samples combined with additional covariates such as dietary isotopes or social information.

The second area is model-based clustering of ordinal categorical data. These techniques allow you to identify groups of similar individuals based on their categorical responses, and obtain interpretable information about the patterns observed in those groups. This is collaborative work with Ivy Liu, Richard Arnold, Shirley Pledger and Daniel Fernandez (UPC Barcelona).
