In 2015 the Environmental Defence Society published Vanishing Nature: facing New Zealand’s biodiversity crisis, an analysis of the drivers of biodiversity loss in Aotearoa. The outcome of that report was that unmoderated influence of vested interests severely constrains the effectiveness of environmental management. Much more effective interventions are needed to curtail the underlying drivers of harm, including transformational changes to the tax system aimed at rewarding private conservation and taxing private economic benefits gained from biodiversity loss. Without strategic change, we predict a parlous future for nature.

Ten years on, this webinar reflects on the findings of Vanishing Nature and its recommendations, progress towards them and where much more effort is still needed.
