The Limits to Growth book, authored by Meadows et al, was published in 1972 and predicted that around 2030 the world would start to experience severe problems due to historic population growth and economic growth. This panel discussion investigates how the world’s problems in 2025, including climate change, resource limits, ecosystem collapse and the possibility of world wars are linked to growth. With so much information to hand and with many publications and books available on the issue it is simply astonishing that we have not taken remedial action much sooner. Perhaps we have been trained to ignore the available information (don’t look up) and to continue with business as usual.
The speakers will give a short summary of the now quite dire situation and will propose solutions. Bob Lloyd will investigate the background data. Steve Keen will throw light on the role of economists and how they have drastically under-estimated the costs of climate change. Rosemary Penwarden will talk about climate change and her long-term advocacy for the environment and future generations. There will be at least an hour for you to ask questions, make comments and suggest topics for further discussion.
