This year’s Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year, Professor Bev Lawton (ONZM), will tell you about the exciting goal she and her team have set in relation to eliminating cervical cancer in Aotearoa, and even internationally. Her research has led to policy and practice changes within the National Cervical Screening Programme, which in 2023 introduced self-testing for all. Leading He Tapu Te Whare Tangata – a body of work which carries the call to action “No Elimination Without Us,” the introduction of self-testing sees progress towards the elimination goal.
Professor Lawton, nō Ngāti Porou, is the founder/director of Te Tātai Hauora o Hine (National Centre for Women’s Health Research Aotearoa) at Victoria University. Her contribution to health research, particularly in relation to Māori women and children, has been recognised through many awards including the Health Research Council’s Beaven Medal.
