Inaugural Professorial Lecture – Professor Gabrielle Davie

About Professor Gabrielle Davie’s research
Gabrielle is an applied biostatistician who contributes across all stages of health research projects. She specialises in using Aotearoa New Zealand’s routinely collected health data, including hospital discharge and mortality records, to address diverse research questions.

While her early work focused on injury, she now works more broadly, typically within large multidisciplinary teams. Her current Health Research Council–funded projects include evaluating a national falls prevention pathway, examining the impact of rurality on health outcomes and healthcare delivery, and assessing the economic burden of cancer on individuals and their whānau.

Her national and international injury-related collaborations cover injury surveillance, occupational injury, emergency medical services response and major trauma. A highlight of her collaboration with the Centre for Rural Health is the development of the Geographic Classification for Health, now widely used by researchers and government agencies.

Gabrielle completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Otago and a Masters in Biostatistics at the University of Melbourne. After roles at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and at the University of Otago’s Wellington campus, she joined the Department of Public Health in Dunedin in 2005. She is currently Director of Research for her Department and an Editor for the International Journal of Population Data Science.
