Fire and rust: the impact of myrtle rust on post-fire regeneration in Australia. A seminar by Geoff Pegg *ONLINE*

Presented by Geoff Pegg,
Forest Pathologist, Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries

While fire is important to Australia’s native flora, in 2019-20 severe wildfires across Australia burnt large areas of native forest. Post-fire regeneration, including reshooting and seedling emergence en masse, has created ideal conditions for the spread and development of myrtle rust (causal pathogen: Austropuccinia psidii).

In this webinar, forest pathologist Geoff Pegg will introduce a project aiming to determine the impact of myrtle rust on regenerating Myrtaceae in a range of ecosystems in New South Wales and south-east Queensland. This work will identify species that are showing susceptibility, and the forms of regeneration (re-shoots/ seedlings) that are affected. So far, disease levels across and within species have been determined, and the severity of impact is being monitored for selected species over time. Data collected will be used to identify species and ecosystems most affected and help inform species conservation programs.
