A seminar presented by Dr Martin Fronius, Department of Physiology
Being trained in biophysics, Martin’s research focuses on the function and regulation of ion channels. Emphasis is on how mechanical forces (e.g., shears tress and pressure) regulate ion channel function of ENaC and Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid (TRPV)) channels and how this influences arterial blood pressure regulation.

This seminar will present evidence for a new mechanism relying on N‑glycans of ENaC that enable shear stress sensation and arterial blood pressure regulation. Further, the discovery of an yet unknown ENaC variant in human arteries will be shared and its potential implications for vascular physiology will be discussed.

The last part of the presentation will explore ENaC’s potential role in COVID‑19 by introducing an ENaC centric perspective aiming to explain symptoms such as respiratory distress (and pulmonary oedema) and the loss of taste/smell.
